How a Preheat System Benefits Your Engine!

Tanis Preheat Systems are available at Air Power, Inc. and can benefit your aircraft engine in so many ways!  If you want your engine ready to go every time, a Tanis preheat system is an excellent investment!!!

EXPERTISE!  ENGINE LONGEVITY!  QUALITY!

Why Choose Tanis?

Only a preheat system from Tanis will thoroughly heat-soak your engine! This will keep the metal above dew point removing the chance of condensation on your engine. Condensation forms when warm oil/water vapor rises from your oil pan and hits a colder surface (like your cylinder heads!). This is the main reason why you want your cylinders and case warmer than your oil pan.

A Tanis Preheat System will heat the metal on your engine and will keep the tolerances of the metal more uniform causing a reduction in wear during startup. For deep heating, Tanis piston preheat systems use a unique and patented heated threaded element that can go into the rocker cover or intake to fully heat the head of the cylinder. Heating the cylinder heads protect the engine and allows the heat to distribute through the engine cylinders more uniformly. Tanis uses heating pads on the case of the engine to ensure uniform heating and to ensure the case stays above the dew point. Preheating your engine also reduces the chance of frost on the spark plugs and reduces startup time which saves fuel and wear and tear on your engine.

Multi-point preheating is standard on all our systems. During the cold winter months most engine/aircraft manufacturers require multi-point preheating before starting their engines. Tanis fully heat-soaks the mass of the engine all the way into the center crankshaft. Tanis also heat-soaks general aviation engines in a much shorter time than the forced air heat application. Tanis systems are designed to be safely left on for extended periods of time and allow for rapid starts. These systems not only heat your engine for cold weather startup but also protect your engine!

  1. Reduced Wear and Tear: Starting a cold engine can cause the equivalent of 500 hours of wear and tear on critical components. A preheat system helps mitigate this stress by ensuring a gentler start.

  2. Ease of Starting: Preheating significantly improves the chances of a successful engine start, reducing the risk of issues like frosted spark plugs.

  3. Shorter Run-Up Time: Cold weather operations often require longer run-up times. With preheating, you can save fuel and minimize the time spent on engine checks before takeoff.

  4. Cylinder Scoring Prevention: Proper preheating helps prevent cylinder scoring, which can occur due to uneven thermal expansion between aluminum crankcases and steel engine parts.

  5. Increased Safety: Engine manufacturers mandate preheating for good reason. It ensures safer operations and extends the life of your engine.

  6. Condensation Prevention: Tanis multi-point preheat systems thoroughly heat-soak your engine, keeping the metal above dew point. This eliminates the chance of condensation forming on your engine, which can lead to corrosion.

Remember that Tanis Aircraft Products has been a pioneer in developing preheat systems for various engine types, including piston engines, helicopters, and turbines. Their systems meet rigorous FAA Supplemental Type Certification requirements!

ABOUT TANIS: "Tanis Aircraft Products is a company of “firsts”.  Since starting our business in 1974, we were the first to develop engine-mounted preheat systems for piston engines, first to offer helicopter preheat, first to offer turbine preheat, and the first to meet the rigorous requirements for FAA Supplemental Type Certification. Staying first means we will continue to be responsive to the changing needs of our customers as technology in the industry evolves. Doing this requires a staff of highly qualified and well trained specialists.

We manufacture all of our own systems at our facility in Piqua, OH USA.

All of us at Tanis truly care about your aircraft, your safety, and your ability to get to your destination despite the cold weather. We want to thank our long time customers from around the world for their loyalty over the years. If you are new to Tanis you will soon discover that we are friendly, informed, and willing to work with you personally to find the best preheat solution for your aircraft. We think that you will agree that Tanis really is first in preheat. We welcome your call and we are looking forward to hearing from you.

Tanis Team"

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

CAN I LEAVE A TANIS PREHEAT SYSTEM PLUGGED IN ALL THE TIME?

Yes, Tanis preheat systems can be plugged in continuously in ambient temperatures less than 100F/38C.

CAN I USE A PORTABLE GENERATOR?

Yes, as long as it has adequate continuous wattage capacity. It could be in AC or DC even.

HOW HOT DOES THE ENGINE GET?

Tanis systems are designed to raise the engine temperature 60±10 degrees F° (33.3±5.5 C°) above ambient.

WHAT KIND OF EXTENSION CORD DO I NEED?

  • 16+ gauge extension cord is normally adequate for 50 foot runs.
  • The longer the cord the heavier (lower) the gauge you should use.
  • A cold weather cord is recommended in cold regions for flexibility and reliability.
  • See your systems pilot guide for more information.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO INSTALL A TANIS PREHEAT KIT?

On a GA aircraft once the cowl is removed, it may take 2-5 man hours for completion per engine. Pad heat elements require curing before the aircraft can return to service. For helicopter and complete aircraft installs the time is variable based on the status of the aircraft and type of aircraft. Contact Tanis for additional help.
